pasadangerous = Making Pasadena a safe bicycle city

124 people were killed in crashes while biking in California in 2012, representing 4% of the 2,857 people killed on California roads and highways. This is a 7% increase over the 116 people who lost their lives while biking in 2011.

existing scenario

Case of Pasadena, CA

petition by Caltech to improve the east - west bike routes

" We petition the City of Pasadena to extend bike lanes on Cordova Ave west of Lake Ave and to consider installing bike lanes on the very wide one-way streets Green St and Union St. In addition, we ask Pasadena to consider creating a separated bike lane on Del Mar Ave to improve the use of this route for cyclists. These improvements will create an east-west bike corridor and help make streets safer for everyone - cyclists, pedestrians, and cars alike. "

existing bike routes and traffic data from Pasadena transportation department

After studying the traffic data plans, existing and proposed bike routes from Pasadena transportation department, it was concluded that the east west corridor especially the Del Mar Blvd needed some special efforts in order to make bicycling safe on these roads.

Final proposal

Action plan

Step 1 :

MODIFICATION IN PROPOSED BIKE PLAN

Step 2 :

INSTALLATION OF BICYCLE INFRASTRUCTURE – PARKING & RENTAL FACILITIES

Step 3 :

REDESIGNING CLASS III ENHANCED BIKE ROUTE CLASSIFICATION from existing Pasadena Bike route

Step 4 :

IMPLEMENTATION OF SENSOR BASED INTERSECTIONS ALONG WITH SOLAR BIKE LANES

Step 5 :

INSTALLATION OF BICYCLE TRACKING DEVICE ON HEAVY VEHICLES

proposed bike plan

Proposed roadside Bike Parking + Bike rental facility

Diagonal bike parking on the pedestrian paving (footpath) along with Bike rental facilities at the shuttle bus stations. The Bike rental facility is based on a subscription model as the Zip Car.

proposed class iii enhanced bike route design

All dimensions are in metres.

proposed intersection design and traffic light sequencing

For illustration purpose, the Del Mar Blvd and Los Robles intersection was considered.

Proposal 1

This proposal uses a separate sequence for cyclists and pedestrians.

Proposal 2

In this proposal the cyclist and vehicle follow the same sequencing simultaneously.

cost estimates

Cost of a Dedicated Paved Bike Path or sidewalk, at least 8 feet wide : APPROX. $ 600,000 per mile

Striping/Painting Bike lane : APPROX. $ 11.50 per sq.ft

Bicycle symbols / markings : APPROX. $ 200 each

Dedicated Bicycle Signals : APPROX. $ 12,800 each

Bike Detection Sensor : APPROX. $ 500 each

FOR EXAMPLE : DEL MAR BLVD FROM MARENGO AVE TO LAKE AVE (PART OF PROPOSED CLASS III ENHANCED BIKE ROUTE)

TOTAL LENGTH OF THAT SEGMENT : 0.8 MILES

MAJOR INTERSECTIONS : 4

TOTAL ESTIMATED COST OF MAKING THE ABOVE SEGMENT AS PER NEW DESIGN :

BIKE PATHS + SIDEWALK : APPROX. 1.6 MILES IN TOTAL COST : $ 960,000

BIKE LANE STRIPING / PAINTING : APPROX. 40000 SQ.FT COST : $ 460,000

DEDICATED BICYCLE SIGNALS : 4 NUMBERS COST : $ 51,200

BIKE DETECTION SENSORS : 16 NUMBERS COST : $ 8,000

TOTAL COST ESTIMATE FOR PREPARING A 0.8 MILE CLASS III ENHANCED BIKE ROUTE ACCORDING TO THE NEW DESIGN WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $ 1,479,200.
